Put some gas in your tank!

The Law of Inertia, also known as Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force. Objects, and humans are objects too, resist changes to their state of motion. This is what holds us back. I used to but suffer from terminal inertia, but I’m now trying to see everything with unblinded eyes. I have to honestly assess myself, and part of that is dissecting what bothers me about others. Because what bothers us the most in others is what we most need to change about ourselves. It’s a constant reminder to us. We recognize the fault in ourselves whether we admit it or not, and when we see the same fault in others it seems like an oversized problem because we are wrestling with it internally.

Growth is difficult. It’s much easier to stay the same, to pretend this is all life is, all it’s about. Growth is uncomfortable and often painful. Humans are wired to avoid discomfort and seek the path that’s the easiest to travel. Smooth and straight and unchanging, that’s the path humans think is ideal. It’s a path ideal for stagnation though, and leads to inertia. It’s frightening to change any aspect of our lives, especially fundamental changes. But that’s where the life you desire exists- on the path that looks dark, twisty and unnerving. It might lead through the overgrown forest, or cross a rickety bridge that’s missing some treads, but it will take you to a different destination than the straight and easy path does.

Are you brave enough or tired enough of the status quo to follow the unexplored path? Sure, it could lead to falling off a cliff if you let your imagination take over. Or it might lead to dreams you never realized you had. What it will certainly do is change your current situation. If that’s your goal, the only way to do it is follow the uncharted trail, even if you can just make out the beginning of it hidden in the overgrowth. Newton's First Law tells us once we start moving we will likely continue in that direction. Apply some force to your issues, overcome your inertia and keep going!
